How to get a data only iPhone plan for $16.67 per month
Update: Unlimited Media Net data package is no longer available. So this offer no longer works. Having an iPhone is very useful and cool, but the plans are quite expensive compared to other data-only plans, such as t-mobile's and Sprint SERO for example. So, how does one get a data only iPhone plan for a measly $16.67 per month?
- Buy a $100 ATT prepaid SIM card. It's not absolutely necessary to buy the $100 card, but doing so will give you bonus credits and it will last for a year (although you will be using the balance in 5 months). You will however have to buy a card with at least $20 in credit*.
- Hacktivate or Jailbreak your iPhone. Note, this is only necessary with the iPhone 2G. Tools such as iLiberty+, iJailbreak (Mac) and ZiPhone (PC Windows) will allow your iPhone 2G to work with any ATT SIM card. The 3G iPhone will accept any ATT SIM cards out of the box.
- With the ATT SIM card in place, dial 611 with the iPhone. Enter the new phone number and the pin. Next, Select the "buy features" option, then select "data packages". Choose the unlimited Media Net option. The unlimited Media Net will cost $20 per month, which will be deducted from your $100. Note: If you are planning to use voice or text messaging, choose the $1 per day and $.10 per minute option for your prepaid SIM. The unlimited Media Net will only work with this plan.
- So how do you get the plan for $16.67? Each time you buy another $100 refill, you get bonus credit. After buying the $100 refill 3 times, you will be getting $20 extra in bonus credit, which can be used to buy the unlimited Media Net. Therefore, you are paying $100 for 6 months of unlimited Media Net, making your monthly cost $16.67.
- Important! Don't forget to renew your unlimited Media Net plan before the 30 days is up, so you avoid paying $10 per megabyte for data if the unlimited data runs out.
- Enjoy!

Note: there is one fixable minor annoyance: Every 15-30 minutes or so, all iPhones with old firmware will pop up a message that says “The last transaction cost 0.00 USD. Your account balance is ($XX.XX) USD.” If your iPhone does this, upgrade your firmware to the latest version and the alert will only pop up after voice calls and not data usage.
*To make things a bit easier, you can set up automatic refills through your ATT GoPhone account online.

I thought AT&T eliminated the pay as you go data plans so they would stop people from using this loophole. Have you or anyone else you know tried this recently?
I love the concept and hate having to use a calling plan with the iPhone, but I'd want to know for sure before cancelling my contract with AT&T and going prepaid.
thanks for the heads up JShwa, you are right, the deal is dead.
