It costs $4,715.75 to get a license plate in Shanghai, China

Since traffic is so bad in Shanghai, vehicle license plates are auctioned off and are very hard to get, especially for middle and lower class individuals. The price of a license plate in many instances is higher than the cost of a small used car (!). In March 2008, the average price was 32,169 RMB (Chinese Yuan) or about $4,715.75. At one point, in December 2007, the average price of a license plate in Shanghai was 56,042 RMB or about $8,213! Insane.
